New Balance 1000
The boot that its time rejected and history proved right - New Balance 1000
Few silhouettes have a story of such fall and rebirth as the New Balance 1000. Upon its initial release, it flopped so badly that the brand completely removed it from the catalog after two years. Two decades later, the creative director of New Balance Made in USA resurrected it, turning it into one of the most sought-after retro silhouettes in recent years. Today, it regularly appears in collaborations with the most prominent names in streetwear and has become a symbol of how good design can outpace its time.
History: the flop of 1999 that became a cult classic
The New Balance 1000 first launched in 1999 as a trail-running hybrid that fit the era's design with bold metallic overlays and wavy panels on the upper. The model number itself references one of the brand's oldest advertising campaigns for the 990 model, whose slogan was: “On a scale of 1 to 1000, this shoe is nine hundred ninety." Despite its progressive design, the shoe failed commercially at the time of its release and was completely removed from the catalog in 2001 – a similar fate befell the later cult model 2002, which later returned as the 2002R.
For nearly twenty years, the 1000 lay forgotten in the archive until Teddy Santis, the creative director of New Balance Made in USA, brought it back into the spotlight. Since its return, the silhouette has become a favorite target for collaborations with names like Joe Freshgoods, Aimé Leon Dore, Kith, and Concepts – the latter collaboration drew inspiration directly from the historic thousand-dollar bill from 1890, nicknamed “Grand Watermelon,” and from the story of a bank heist in Chicago.
Technology: ABZORB cushioning and Stability Web
What makes the 1000 comfortable even after more than 25 years since its design are these features:
- Polyurethane and ABZORB midsole: A combination of cushioning in the heel and toe provides a soft yet structured feel underfoot – the toe midsole is 25% thicker than average, enhancing comfort for all-day wear.
- Stability Web: A supportive element in the midfoot that keeps the foot securely in place and adds stability during extended walking.
Who the model is for
The 1000 is a fashion silhouette for you if you're looking for archival design with a truly unique story of failure and comeback – ideal for collectors of retro silhouettes and collaboration fans who appreciate pronounced cushioning even during all-day wear and long standing.

More than a century of tradition based on stable and reliable movement. These are the New Balance shoes, which have become a symbol around which a cult of comfortable walking and running lovers has been created during the 20th century. But beyond sneakers, New Balance is also at the forefront of everyday and sports fashion. Every year, a special collection is released and more than one football team boasts the NB logo on their jersey.
The history and development of New Balance shoes
On our website and practically anywhere else, you won't find a large number of brands as old as New Balance. In fact, as early as 1906, the New Balance Arch Support Company was formed to provide specific aids for each shoe. These were designed to not only provide comfort to the then not-so-comfortable shoes, but more importantly stability by supporting the arch of the foot - hence the name New Balance.
However, New Balance sneakers as shoes did not start to come out until many years later. Specifically, the first silhouette of a New Balance shoe saw the light of day in 1960 when the Trackster model came out. It was unique among the others primarily because it was the first outright running shoe with a crimped sole.
But the marketing didn't work very well and for a long time New Balance shoes were still a community affair. It wasn't until the 1970s that sales started to grow, with the popularisation of running, which was also linked to the hosting of the now iconic Boston Marathon. New Balance shoes began to become popular among runners and the company slowly but surely became a leading manufacturer of running shoes.
For running? Yes, but also no.
Today, however, men's and women's New Balance sneakers aren't just a running thing. Over years of branding and image building, they have become sneakers for almost every situation. Today we wear New Balance shoes before a trip to the countryside, a city walk but also a social event and still undoubtedly before a sporting performance.
New Balance sneakers can therefore be found in a variety of different designs. Men's and women's, in black and white and many other colours. The most popular models today are mainly New Balance sneakers with the 247, 373, 574 and 997. Of course, you can find all these New Balance shoes on Footshop. But besides these, there are also many others and the ranges of the latest silhouettes are constantly growing. So before you make your final choice, carefully examine all of our New Balance sneakers.
A record for stability.
New Balance footwear today is not afraid to venture into collaborations with other fashion brands, but also artists or athletes. It's not so long ago that the NB logo also started to appear on the jerseys of some football teams, and it's not impossible that the brand's influence and reach will continue to grow in the future. New Balance sneakers are worn, for example, by Trayvon Bromell, the American sprinter who became the first junior ever to break the magic ten-second mark in the 100 metres. Could it be that New Balance shoes helped him to achieve this?
In short,New Balance sneakers are a phenomenon that we have been wearing for many decades and everything indicates that we will be wearing them for many decades to come. And hopefully in greater numbers. The original intention of the brand, to make wearing sneakers on a daily basis more enjoyable, has not left New Balance shoes even more than a century after the legendary phrase was introduced to the market.
So be part of a tradition with a clear vision and name your sneakers with the iconic NB in the logo.
