Aggressive grip, stability and confidence for the technical trail - Hoka® Speedgoat
The Hoka Speedgoat is one of Hoka's most iconic trail shoes. They're designed for running on tough terrain where you need maximum traction, stability and reliable cushioning for long miles in the mountains. With a distinctive foam layer and Meta-Rocker geometry, they provide a smooth stride, sure footing and comfort even on longer races or mountain expeditions. The Speedgoat line is known for its aggressiveness and excellent foot hold, which you'll appreciate on technical sections.
The model is available in several versions depending on your running style. The Speedgoat 5 is the latest and most versatile version - lighter than the previous generation, more stable and with a redesigned upper for better breathability. The Speedgoat Mid GTX offers a raised cut and GORE-TEX® membrane for cooler or wet runs. And the Speedgoat GTX with its waterproof design is ideal for rough weather, winter runs and terrain full of mud or snow. All variants have an aggressive outsole with Vibram® Megagrip compound and 5mm grips for confidence even in tough conditions.
They work best on rocks, mud, roots, gravel and mountain trails where their grip and stable platform come into full effect. With normal trail use, you can expect a lifespan of around 600-900 km, depending on the terrain and running style. If you're looking for a shoe that will hold you up on steep climbs, technical descents and variable surfaces, the Hoka Speedgoat is the obvious choice.
Materials
Engineered mesh: Advanced technical knit designed to serve different functions in various parts of the shoe. Unlike traditional mesh, this material is made with variable fiber density from a single piece of fabric. In areas where the foot needs stability (e.g., around the heel), the knit is dense and firm. Conversely, in zones with high thermal load (e.g., over the toes), the knit's openings are larger for maximum breathability. The result is a seamless construction that minimizes the risk of chafing, maintains shape, and rapidly wicks moisture away from the foot.
Regular D
EVA: (Ethylene vinyl acetate) is the most widely used midsole material, valued for its extreme lightness and excellent cushioning capabilities. This foam structure contains thousands of microscopic air bubbles that effectively absorb shock and protect the musculoskeletal system. It is highly flexible, resistant to stress cracking and easily moldable, allowing manufacturers like adidas or Altra to create specific zones of support. It represents the ideal standard for soft impact and comfort in sports and everyday wear.
Early stage Meta-Rocker: Early Stage Meta-Rocker technology is a feature in HOKA shoes designed to enhance the running experience. This technology places the transition zone of the rocker sole behind the metatarsal heads, closer to the heel. This placement helps create a smoother footfall and allows for a quicker transition from heel to forefoot, making it ideal for runners. However, it is not recommended for those with balance or stability issues, as the extended slope can reduce stability.
Super critical foam: It represents a technological revolution in cushioning, created by the process of saturating foam (often PEBA or EVA) with nitrogen or CO₂ at high pressure and temperature. This process creates a unique cellular structure in the material that makes the midsole incredibly lightweight, extremely soft, yet highly reactive. Unlike conventional foams, it offers significantly higher energy return and resistance to material fatigue. It's a key component of state-of-the-art "super shoes" that help runners perform at their peak and recover faster.
Rubber: The rubber sole is a traditional and highly reliable element in the construction of footwear, valued especially for its extreme mechanical resistance and grip. This contact layer is made of natural or synthetic rubber, which is characterized by its high density and elasticity. Due to its physical properties, it provides excellent traction on a wide range of surfaces, from smooth asphalt to unpaved terrain. In addition, the rubber is naturally waterproof and resistant to temperature fluctuations, ensuring stability and a secure stride in a variety of climatic conditions.
Vibram® Megagrip: Vibram MegaGrip technology is a high-performance rubber compound that offers unrivalled grip on wet and dry terrain and is extremely durable. This technology is ideal for long distances and new adventures, whether you're an athlete or a lover of the outdoors.
A Technological Revolution in Cushioning and a New Definition of Functional Design with HOKA
The brand HOKA represents the pinnacle of performance footwear in Footshop's portfolio, having defined the category of maximalism. This French-origin project burst onto the market with a vision that radically challenged the then-current trends of minimalism and "barefoot" running. Instead of thin soles, HOKA offered a massive midsole with unprecedented cushioning. Today, this footwear is seen as a technological statement sought after not only by ultra-marathoners but also by a community focused on modern urbanism, where comfort and technical aesthetics are priorities.
From Alpine Peaks to the Front of the Peloton: History and Biomechanical Progress
The brand's history began in 2009 in Annecy, French Alps, where it was founded by two visionaries and experts in sports equipment development, Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard. Their goal was to develop a shoe that, thanks to its specific geometry, would allow for faster and gentler descents in extreme terrain. The name "Hoka One One" comes from Maori and translates to "to fly over the earth", perfectly defining the sensation of walking and running that these shoes provide.
Within a decade, HOKA conquered the world of professional running. Today, stars like three-time Olympic triathlon champion Jan Frodeno and record-holder for many ultra-long distance races Jim Walmsley dominate the brand's models. However, due to its unique, almost "oversized" silhouette, the brand has also spilled into the lifestyle sphere, becoming a staple in the wardrobes of those who see shoes as tools for maximum performance and as specific aesthetic objects.
Meta-Rocker Engineering and Pillars of Technological Superiority
What we appreciate about HOKA shoes at Footshop is their comprehensive technological engineering, which addresses movement efficiency at every stage of the step. A key element is the Meta-Rocker geometry, a specific curvature of the sole with a low drop that acts as a cradle, supporting a smooth transition from heel to toe. Among the most valued models in our selection are:
- HOKA Clifton: The standard for road running and high-end daily wear. It offers the ideal balance between cushioning and responsiveness while maintaining an extremely low weight.
- HOKA Bondi: A model with maximum cushioning using ultra-light EVA foam, synonymous with joint protection during long distances.
- HOKA Speedgoat: An iconic trail silhouette equipped with a sole featuring specific grip that ensures traction in the most challenging technical terrain.
- HOKA Tor Ultra / Kaha: Models utilizing waterproof membranes and premium nubuck, which have become icons of modern functional design.
At Footshop, we recommend pairing these models with progressive technical clothing. Investing in HOKA footwear is an investment in the health of your musculoskeletal system and in a design that isn't afraid to stand out. Choose your pair from our premium selection and experience the technology that taught the world to love movement in complete comfort.
