This treatment is key to maintaining breathability - if the outer fabric were to soak up water, it would form an impenetrable barrier that would prevent body vapour from escaping outwards. While DWR doesn't provide complete waterproofing like a membrane, it is an essential accessory that keeps clothing light, dry and fully functional even in rainy weather.
