The roots of using this design on Vans shoes is dated back to the end of 70s, when Steve Van Doren, son of the founder Paul, noticed that skaters drew the above-mentioned checkerboard design with black permanent pens on the white soles of Slip-Ons. Checkerboards have definitely become legendary after 1982, hand in hand with the premiere of the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High, where they were worn by the main character portrayed by Sean Penn.
